October Update

Our last monthly event, Mystery Tees, is coming up this Sunday October 20th with a 10am start. It will be a 4 man scramble with the holes set up completely different from normal. Contact the clubhouse by Thursday night if you are interested in playing.
The Fall Banquet will be Friday October 25th at Broadway Pizza (on the restaurant side) with a social hour starting at 5:30 and the meeting starting at 6:30. There will be food and drink tickets at the banquet.
The deadline to redeem the chits won this year is October 31st. Be sure to stop by the clubhouse to see if you have any left.
If you have any 4-ball or matchplay matches left, please get them taken care of as soon as possible.
Not a big surprise, but the plans for building a new clubhouse have fallen through.
Funding for City Courses

First off, let me apologize for getting this message out so late... I dropped the ball on this one.
There will be a Park Board meeting on Oct. 1st where Larry Mortenson (Park Board Commissioner for the 5th Ward and avid golfer) will be pushing for additional funding to be provided for the city golf courses. He wrote an open letter to the board (you can download here: http://northernhillsmensclub.com/docs/ ) concerning the lack of funds being provided. There is also a spreadsheet providing more data that he makes reference to in his letter.
This is something that does concern all of us and if you have the chance, please send an email to voice your support with what he is trying to do.

September Update

We have an event coming up this Sunday September 22nd at 9am. The Lone loon will have 4 man teams that will combine scores from the Loon with the best shot score from the other three group members. There will be a meal provided after the event. Deadline to get registered is Thursday night.
There is still two more weeks left to qualify for the 19 man shootout which will be played on October 5th.
We are getting close to the end of season which means it is time to check to see if you have any chits and spend them before they expire.
Also, there are early bird memberships available at the proshop for the 2014 season.

Club Championship Reminder

Just a reminder that this weekend is our Club Championship. It is a TWO DAY EVENT and is our only event that is NOT A SHOTGUN START. Tee times will be set up by the clubhouse and group you with your flight. The groupings will be available on the website and the clubhouse on Friday. For Saturday the championship flight will be teeing off first with the first tee time being 7:30am. On Sunday it will be reversed with the higher flights teeing off early.
We will be doing individual skins for both days (by flight). To be in for the skins you need to pay $10 before the Saturday round ($5 going to each day). You will get a drink ticket for each day. Despite what the description on the website said, this will not be a food event. We have moved the food event to September.
Registration deadline is Thursday night so that the flights can be organized and tee times posted on Friday.
3rd Annual Sorin Samanta Memorial Golf Outing

This is not a Mens Club event. Sorin Samanta was a long time member of the Mens Club and the 3rd annual 4-Man Scramble in his memory will be played at Northern Hills this Saturday July 27th with registration at 11am and a shotgun start at 12pm. Cost is $32 per person ($22 if you have a city golf pass) and you get 18 holes of golf with cart and a BBQ meal to follow.
You can register with Kennedy Cheruiyot directly by calling 507-269-1986 or at the Northern Hills clubhouse (281-6170).

Calcutta Reminder

Our next event coming up this Sunday July 21st is the Calcutta. The deadline to register is Thursday night. There will be an auction of the teams on Friday at the Elks (in the back section by the bar, NOT in the large room where we had our icebreaker) with a social hour starting at 5:30pm and the auction starting at 6:30pm. You will get two drink tickets at the auction and a food ticket if you like (they have a taco night on Friday).
At the auction, anybody is allowed ti bid on teams even if they are not in the Mens Club. You are expected to pay that night in cash or check if you have a winning bid on a team.
You have until the start of the event on Sunday to buy back up to half of your team from the person who bought the rights to it. This event will have a 9am shotgun start.
Unlike other events, the Calcutta will have ties decided by an actual playoff (other events use a scorecard playoff). All teams that are subject to playoffs must be ready at the tee box no later than 15 minutes after the final scores are in. Teams that are not present within 15 minutes will be considered to have forfeited.
Besides the upcoming event, the qualifying for the 19man shoot out has started (no scores will be posted on the qualification board, only names) and is $3 per try (18 holes). Also, check the matchplay board and make sure you get your match in by the deadline for the first round (July 31).

Just a quick reminder that the 2-Man Combo registration deadline is tomorrow night Thursday June 20th. You can register at the clubhouse, by calling the course, or online: http://ghin.com/eclub/NorthernHillsMensClub/
The event will be a 9am shotgun start with six holes best ball, six holes best shot, and 6 holes alternate shot and you will have the option to place parimutuel bets before the start. Following the event will be a brat/burger meal.
The deadline for the first round of matchplay is June 30... Any matches not completed will be decided by a coin toss.
There will be a 4th of July big cup tournament at Northern. THIS IS NOT A MENS CLUB EVENT. Cost is $50/player. If you are interested contact the clubhouse for more information.
June Update

Our second monthly event, the 2-Man Combo, is coming up on Sunday June 23rd. This is a 6 hole best shot, 6 hole best ball, 6 hole alternate shot event with a shotgun start at 9am.
We are going to do a little test as far as registration goes for this event. GHIN has been working on developing a web-based system (eClubhouse) to allow clubs connect with the courses pro shops for several years now and have finally got it up and running.
Using eClubhouse we can set up online registration for events and then have the pro shop download that straight into their tournament software. You can still register by calling the clubhouse or by signing the sign up sheet out there.
To use the eClubhouse site, you need to register an eGolfer account (some of you already have this). The eGolfer creates a profile for your GHIN number and protects it from having any random person enter scores in your name.
Once logged in to GHIN, on the right hand side of the page you will see a small account profile with "Select a Clubhouse" at the bottom with (45-0574-1 Northern Hills Mens Club) in the drop down. Click "Go" to jump to our eclubhouse site. Alternatively, you should also be able to use this link to get there directly: http://ghin.com/eclub/NorthernHillsMensClub
The event should be on the front page and you just need to click on it and then click "Register For Event".
Just like registering at the clubhouse, registration closes Thursday night (June 20) but the online registration will stay open until midnight.

Red White and Blue Reminder

Our first event, the Red White and Blue will be this Sunday with a 9am shotgun start. Please be sure to check in for the event by 8:15-8:30am. Breakfast sandwiches will be available – Zach will have the restaurant open by 8am.
The sign up deadline for the event is dusk on Thursday May 23.
Sunday will also be the deadline to sign up for match play and four ball competitions.
The Work Day has been rescheduled for Sunday June 16 at 7am. A sign up sheet will be at the Sunday event for that as well.
Also, you must pay your dues before the start of the Sunday event if you haven't already!

Due to possible bad weather, the work day for Northern Hills Mens club that was scheduled for this Sunday May 19th will be postponed. We will still have one and will need lots of helpers. Looking at a day in mid-June so hope to see you all out working then.

Just a quick note that there will be no carts allowed on the course until at least Thursday.
Also, the weekly events were supposed to kick off this week but they have been pushed back until next week. There will still be a game this week but it will be unofficial and won't count for the dirty dozen qualifying or be posted to the website.

Just a couple of early season notes:
The early bird tourney that had been planned for this weekend has been cancelled but the course should be open starting this Saturday.
The week of May 8th marks the start of the weekly events.
4-Ball and Matchplay signup is available at the clubhouse. Signup deadline is the first event.
Our first event is the Red, White and Blue on Sunday May 26th. More information will be sent out as we get closer to the event.
Icebreaker Reminder

Just a reminder that the Icebreaker is coming up this Friday at the Elks with the social hour starting at 5:30 and the meeting at 6:30. There will be snacks and appetizers available as well as 2 drink tickets. There will be a drawing for a free membership but you must have already paid for your membership and be present to be eligible (cash or check only).
The early bird tourney is being tentatively pushed back to Sunday April 28th. More information should be available at the Icebreaker or by contacting the clubhouse.
Since the cost of your GHIN registration is part of your mens club fee, all GHIN accounts will only be reactivated for this year after you have paid your mens club dues.
Weekly events will be starting the week of May 8th.
